When it comes to the holidays, we Robertsons are pretty traditional. While we may not have an elf on the shelf or go looking for pickle ornaments, we do have a lot of fun.
Usually, our festivities begin in November. Christmas music starts playing on the radio early in the month, and I’m right and ready, cranking up the volume in my car to Bing Crosby and the other crooners. Music is important in our home, so we have piles of Christmas albums which I play loudly (and proudly!) all over the house.
Every year, we start decorating the weekend after Thanksgiving. Once the turkey is gone, the tree goes up. I love Christmas decorations. No, no, I LOVE Christmas decorations. Baubles and tinsel and lights, I love it all. It’s really important to me that our house be festive. There’s nothing like a festive home to really bring out the Christmas spirit.
Lots of cooking goes on in December, too! We love to bake cookies and decorate them. We use my mom’s teacake cookie recipe, which is divine, and we bake the cookies by the dozen. I also love to make my own homemade granola. I use the honey that I harvest in the granola which gives it a little something extra. Plus, the granola makes a great gift.
Then there are the Christmas movies! We start them December 1st, and I swear, we watch at least one every day. Elf is definitely a favorite of ours, along with National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, and we indulge in a little of the A Christmas Story marathon that is on TV every year. The kids love the classic movies, too, like White Christmas and Holiday Inn. Oh, and the Nutcracker!
And lastly, I love all the time I get to spend with my family. The kids are home from school and the resulting chaos really gets me into the Christmas mood. I love my kids and there’s nothing like having the whole family together! The seven of us like to play games and we like to play them often. The kids love Uno and Clue, while I’m a Monopoly player myself. Our games get a little competitive (looking at you, Jep!), but they’re always a blast! Add some of my mom’s cookies and hot chocolate, and you have a typical holiday evening in the Robertson household.
What are some of your holiday traditions? How do you spend Christmas with your family?

December 23, 2017 at 3:01 amThanks for sharing Jess! Heartwarming to hear your family tradition. We are a new couple and our kid is still 2 years old and just starting to build traditions. I think baking cookies and decorating them will be one of them, especially if we have more kids. 🙂 Merry Christmas to you and your family! Hope to meet you guys personally someday!
